- Research Focus: Does Place Matter?
- Over the past few years we've done extensive research in web-enabled collaboration, managing distributed work, and telework/telecommuting. All these technologies, if successful, indicate that "place" no longer matters. Yet despite years of availability, the changes in how we work aren't living up to original expectations. Perhaps place matters in a different way than what we expected?
- More recently we're taking deep dives in two distinct directions. First, we followed the work of Richard Florida (among others) who sees the "Creative Class" drawn to specific metropolitan areas. Second, we're dissecting social networking applications to discover their keys to success, and how these can be used to compose applications to increase citizen participation in key government initiatives and build a sense of community.
- It's a strange game of connecting the dots, but indications are that place does matter. However, in today's world we're becoming disconnected -- from our places, from nature, and from our communities. Can we use technology to help connect people to their places and their neighbors?
